Can a spouse or child of a foreign employee obtain dependent status in Pakistan?

A spouse or child of a foreign employee may be eligible for a dependent or family-related immigration permission in Pakistan, but the principal employee's visa does not necessarily grant family members an automatic right to enter, reside or work. The correct route depends on nationality, the primary visa category, family relationship, validity of the sponsor's status and Pakistan's current immigration rules. Rules and portal options can change; the applicant should confirm the actual category available through the government's official visa system rather than rely on a general statement that all dependants are included.

Identify the principal visa

Determine whether the employee holds a valid work visa, diplomatic or official permission, business visa or another type. Dependent eligibility may differ between these categories and can be affected by sponsor-specific conditions. A person visiting for a very short assignment may not have the same family route as a worker resident in Pakistan for several years. Obtain the approval letter and complete visa conditions before planning dependent applications.

Verify nationality and travel document

Applicants should identify each dependant's citizenship, passport validity and any nationality-specific restrictions. A spouse with a different nationality from the employed person may have a separate set of entry conditions. The family's planned travel dates should be checked against the government's current portal and official guidance. No agent should promise unrestricted entry solely because the sponsor has a Pakistani employer.

Proof of marriage

A spouse may need an authenticated marriage certificate and supporting identity documents to establish the relationship. Different countries issue marriage records in different formats, so translation and attestation questions can arise. A religious ceremony certificate alone may not meet the exact documentary requirements of the selected visa category. Where a prior marriage or divorce affects marital status, obtain the legally relevant proof rather than submitting contradictory forms.

Proof of parentage

A child's application may require a birth certificate identifying parents, passport and evidence linking the child to the principal worker. Where legal guardianship or an adoption arrangement is involved, special documentation and eligibility issues can arise. Do not assume that an informal family custody letter substitutes for legal parentage or guardianship documents where the immigration authorities require formal proof. The child's records should be consistent with the parents' applications.

Sponsorship and employer support

The Pakistani employer may need to provide a valid employment letter identifying role, salary, expected assignment duration and company information. It should avoid stating that the spouse is an employee if no such employment relationship exists. The worker may also provide proof of accommodation or means where required. A company should clearly distinguish legal sponsorship obligations from a courtesy letter supporting family travel.

Immigration application procedure

Use the visa category actually made available for the family members through the current Pakistan online visa system or competent mission. Each traveller may need an individual application, photograph, supporting record and fee. The decision-making authority may request additional verification. A single work visa document in the principal's name is not necessarily a substitute for each family member's permission. Keep submission and approval records separately for each individual.

Duration and expiry

Dependent status can be linked to the underlying sponsor's lawful stay. The family should record each visa's own expiry date rather than assume all permissions last as long as the worker's contract. Changes in the principal's employment or early departure may affect dependent arrangements. If an extension is needed, apply through the authorised procedure and verify lawful status pending decision. Overstaying can have serious administrative and travel consequences.

Does the spouse have permission to work?

Dependent residence or entry permission does not invariably authorise paid employment or professional practice. A spouse wishing to work for a Pakistani company should check whether a separate work authorisation or change of status is necessary. The ability to study, volunteer or conduct business may also be regulated differently. A company should not place a dependent spouse on payroll merely because they lawfully accompany another worker.

Education and school admissions

A child may require identity, immunisation, age and prior school records for admission to a local educational institution. Immigration permission and school enrolment are separate matters. A family should consider continuity of schooling when calculating the assignment length. A school's willingness to admit a child does not itself establish lawful immigration status, and a valid dependent visa does not guarantee admission to a particular institution.

Healthcare and insurance

The employer's relocation package should specify whether spouses and children receive health coverage, and what happens if the employee's assignment ends. A family's medical expenses are not automatically a statutory employer obligation in every case. Travel and medical insurance should be checked before entry. If a child has continuing treatment needs, available local services and relevant medical documentation can affect practical relocation plans.

Divorce or family status change

If the underlying marital relationship ends while the family resides in Pakistan, the spouse's independent permission may require reassessment. A dependent cannot necessarily rely indefinitely on an earlier marriage certificate after legal status changes. Children's arrangements can raise separate custody and guardianship issues. The parties should seek lawful immigration advice rather than assume the employer can determine family status through an HR letter.

Change of employer

If the foreign worker transfers from one Pakistani company to another, the principal visa may need amendment or fresh approval, depending on its terms. Dependent permissions may also require review. The family should not assume that group companies are interchangeable legal sponsors. The new employer should check the current immigration record before making representations to the government or paying for tickets.

Example: executive with spouse and children

A foreign chief operating officer accepts a two-year assignment with an Islamabad technology company and plans to relocate a spouse and two children. The company should first secure the principal's lawful employment permission. The family should then confirm the current dependent route, supporting documents and separate validity periods. The spouse's plan to undertake professional consulting should be analysed independently rather than folded into the residence application.

Example: mixed-nationality household

A foreign engineer holds a passport from one country, while the spouse and child have passports from two other countries. Their visa eligibility may differ, and the family must check each traveller's requirements. A company letter stating that all are dependants does not automatically override nationality-specific screening. The family should allow time for individual approvals and avoid assuming a joint application produces one common decision.

Refusal or delayed approval

If the family application is refused or remains pending, identify the official reason and any review mechanism. The sponsor may be able to correct missing records or submit a fresh properly supported application where permitted. No applicant should invent a family relationship or alter records to bypass a denial. An adverse decision may involve administrative discretion and security considerations requiring careful assessment of available remedies.

Opinion and recommended course

Spouses and children may qualify for lawful family-related permission, but eligibility, activity rights and duration are not automatic consequences of the employee's work visa. Verify each person's nationality, relationship documents and current category; apply separately as required and monitor expiry. Work permission for a dependent spouse requires its own legal analysis.
